I’m leaving this week to spend some time in the great cities of Europe: London, Prague and Frankfurt. While it can be argued whether or not this vacation is well-deserved, it is certainly well-anticipated.
However, as owner and president of a small business, it is never easy to leave the office for an extended period, especially for an overseas trip. While communication has improved dramatically over the last few years, it is still not flawless—or cheap.
Of course, the real key is ensuring that the clients and staff are all well taken care of and well prepared. It is always a danger to overestimate your own value and I’m quite certain that the world will keep on turning, even with me being gone for a couple of weeks. There is also the very real and legitimate point that without the occasional battery-charging trip, enthusiasm and effectiveness can be negatively impacted—so in a way, this is almost a business necessity (yeah, I know, my staff didn’t fall for that either).
At the same time, it is important to not underestimate one’s value and the impact that being gone will have. It has taken some time and effort to ensure that the staff is ready to pick up the inevitable slack and is prepared to handle any crises that may develop. Letting clients know that you’ll be gone is always a good idea. It is so rare that surprise is a good thing in business.
With that being said, I believe I am prepared for the trip; I’m certainly excited about it and I am comforted by knowing my staff and clients are prepared, as well. Bon voyage, and I’ll see you in a couple of weeks!
Have a wonderful trip!
